Romania outraged by Sky News report on arms trafficking; Ofcom to investigate
A news report aired by Sky News dealing with arms trafficking has outraged Romanian media and authorities. Romanian organized crime prosecutors on Friday announced they will investigate the team of British journalists from Sky News who this week aired a news feature on August 7 about alleged arm traffickers in Romania, on suspicion of spreading false information and putting the country’s security at risk, Balkan Insider reports.
"Their action is putting at risk Romania’s national security by misinforming an international audience about the Romanian authorities' capacity to prevent arms trafficking,” the Directorate for Combatting Organized Crime and Terrorism, DIICOT, which is in charge of the investigation, said in a press release. Sky News report has faced huge criticism in Romania, with authorities, media and public claiming the broadcast is inaccurate. Sky News Chief Correspondent, Stuart Ramsay, and the management of the TV company both stand behind their reporting, however. "Stuart Ramsay and his team delivered a robust report on gun dealing in Romania and we fully stand by the story," Lucy Ellison, PR Manager for Sky News, said in a press release. Prosecutors claim that Sky News Chief Correspondent, Stuart Ramsaypaid the alleged gun dealers for their role in the report, and wrote the lines they used while being filmed. Three Romanian citizens involved in making the TV report have been detained on charges of complicity in communicating and spreading false information and with not respecting the rules on using firearms and setting up an organised crime group. The men were filmed openly by Sky News, but wearing masks to protect their identity. They risk jail sentences of up to five years. Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos reacted to the storm on Thursday, calling on the Romanian authorities to take a stand in regard to the TV report. “It is unacceptable, one cannot denigrate a country without evidence,” Ciolos said. UK media regulator Ofcom announced that it has received a total of 12 complaints (first info was about 6 complaints) and will investigate them carefully in order to decide whether to launch a formal investigation into the matter.
