HBO Europe starts production on two original drama series in Poland
 25 Nov 2016
HBO Europe announced that production has started on Blinded by the Lights, a 6x1 hour original drama series for HBO Poland, and the second series of the acclaimed series Wataha.

Blinded by the Lights

Set in Warsaw in the six days leading up to Christmas, Warsaw's no.1 cocaine dealer plans a holiday in Argentina. All he has to do is work the last few days in Warsaw's twilight world: an endless round of nightclubs and Christmas parties, hipster clients, corrupt cops and politicians and coked up celebrities. But the city won't let him go so easily before he heads south and things start going badly wrong...

Blinded by the Lights is directed and co-written by Krzysztof Skonieczny (Hardkor Disco) from the novel by Jakub Żulczyk, who also co-wrote the screenplay.
Wataha

Shooting has also commenced on Season 2 of Wataha, the critically acclaimed drama about a border guard unit based in the remote Bieszczady Mountains on the Polish border with Ukraine. Series 1 was the highest rating premiere in HBO Poland's history and aired on Channel 4's Walter Presents in the UK.

Shot entirely in the mountains, the story moves forward three years and among its themes are people smuggling, the death of illegal immigrants and the rise of nationalism. The series comprises 6x1 hour episodes. Kasia Adamik and Jan P. Matuszyński direct. The lead writer is Piotr Szymanek.

Antony Root, EVP Original Programming and Production HBO Europe, said:"Our continuing goal is to produce distinctive, high quality drama for local audiences. We believe Blinded by the lights, a story set in Warsaw's demi-monde and showing off the city in a wholly new way, will not only appeal to Polish audiences but also to our subscribers all around the HBO Europe region. We are confident it will equally excite audiences internationally.

"Wataha, set in the rugged Bieszczady Mountains, has already proved its appeal to viewers having achieved huge ratings in Poland for its first season. It also played extremely successfully in the other HBO Europe territories and has sold in foreign markets. We are very excited by this new chapter and the way the writers explore some of the challenges now faced on Europe's longest border.
