EBU hopes for swift resolution of HRT dispute; Croatian pubcaster airs Nazi symbols in music show
The EBU hopes to see a swift resolution to the dispute between its Croatian Member HRT and the Croatian Journalist Union HND. The organization said in statement:
"Strong public service media is essential to healthy democracies and anything that deprives audiences of access to it is damaging to all of society We are concerned by the boycott of HRT organized by HND and different civil and political organizations which saw HRT excluded from a press event this week. We believe that public service broadcasters need to be allowed to carry out their responsibilities freely and without restrictions so that viewers and listeners have ready access to important news and information. We welcome public statements by HRT’s DG Kazimir Bačić in favor of a resolution of the current conflict. We also welcome HRT's reiterated commitment to freedom of expression and to the maintenance of independence in its coverage. We hope that the outstanding issues between HRT and HND can be resolved in the days ahead and will be offering our support in the development of an open and constructive dialogue between all the parties involved." Meanwhile, a new scandal is brewing at the Croatian pubcaster as Nazi symbols were shown in its most popular music program Our Beautiful Homeland (Lijepom Našom). The episode was dedicated to the topic and there was a music band on stage wearing Nazi helmets and bearing the SS logo. This was sort of a musical nativity play in which some of the band members were dressed up like Nazis and the others wore partisan uniforms, after which they simulated a fight but also danced in a car. Then they sang We're Not Going Home Tonight (Nećemo Noćas Doma) and Za Dobra Stara Vremena (For Good Old Times). RELATED
