International organizations provide emergency grants and assistance to Ukrainian journalists
International organizations have introduced emergency funding and support mechanisms for journalists and journalists' organizations, Detector Media reports.
Committee to Protect Journalists The Committee to Protect Journalists' Journalism Assistance Program provides emergency grants to distressed journalists through the CPJ Gene Roberts Foundation. To call for emergency help, get safety advice, or report violations of press freedom, email emergencies@cpj.org. International Federation of Journalists The IJF Security Fund is a tool for journalists facing violence, harassment and threats, or in need of medical care. To call for an ambulance, write to ifj@ifj.org Media Freedom Rapid Response The Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) monitors, monitors and responds to violations of press and media freedom in EU Member States and candidate countries. The project started in 2020 and is funded by the European Commission. Threats to journalists and media workers often require immediate and rapid responses to ensure the safety of those targeted, and to help journalists and media workers at risk of prosecution simply for doing their job. The Alliance is involved in supporting journalists on these issues by providing legal and practical support , public advocacy and information to protect journalists and media workers. Free Press Unlimited Free Press Unlimited manages an international fund of reporters . It provides direct assistance to journalists and the media, allowing them to resume work as soon as possible in the event of a crisis. Short-term support is provided regardless of the media and the area covered by the journalist or the media. Accommodation costs: short-term support for journalists who are unable to work, or the cost of temporary escape from a dangerous or vulnerable situation. Family support: temporary assistance to journalists' family members. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Reporters Without Borders is one of the world's leading NGOs working to protect and promote freedom of information. RSF provides financial and administrative assistance to professional journalists and citizen journalists to help them defend themselves, as well as to the families of imprisoned journalists. National Endowment for Democracy The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a private non-profit foundation that develops and strengthens democratic institutions around the world. Each year, NED provides more than 2,000 grants to support projects of non-governmental groups abroad that work for democratic purposes in more than 100 countries. To gain access to emergency funding, journalists and media workers can write to ukraine@ned.org with ideas and suggestions for quick access to contingencies. Rory Peck Trust Rory Peck Trust manages the Crisis Fund which provides grants to freelance journalists to help with the costs of an immediate crisis, both personal and in cases of force majeure, such as natural disasters or political and civil unrest. Applications from freelancers from Ukraine are encouraged. A grant from the Crisis Fund can help with the cost of temporary relocation and temporary accommodation, as well as security kits, including bulletproof vests and helmets. Questions can be sent to help@rorypecktrust.org European Endowment for Democracy The European Endowment for Democracy (EED) is an independent grant-making organization that supports people seeking democracy in the European Neighborhood - the Eastern Partnership, the Middle East and North Africa, the Western Balkans and other countries. In exceptional and well-founded situations, the EED may process a limited number of requests on an urgent basis. You can apply for support on the EED website. To apply for an emergency, you must check the box below the application form and provide a brief explanation of why your request is urgent, as well as the potential consequences if you do not receive funding urgently. Protection grants may pay for measures to improve the security and protection of human rights defenders and their organizations, including but not limited to: improving the physical security of the organization or person, digital security and communication security; providing assistance to human rights defenders who are being prosecuted; payment of medical care to human rights defenders who have been attacked or injured as a result of peaceful human rights activities; providing family assistance to imprisoned human rights defenders or family members at risk through the activities of human rights defenders. Grants amount to 7.500 euros. To receive a grant, complete an encrypted online security grant application form. Digital support If a Twitter or journalistic organization's Twitter account has been deleted or blocked by attackers, the Global Media Development Forum (GFMD) can help you recover your account by contacting Twitter to help verify your work and status. You need to write to communications@gfmd.info and explain your situation. National Endowment for Democracy Victims of DDOS attacks can be referred by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) to Cloudflare , a US Web Infrastructure and Website Security company that provides a network of content delivery and DDoS mitigation services. Cloudflare offers free protection against DDOS attacks for organizations recommended by NED. For help contact ukraine@ned.org. Facebook has created a Special Operations Center to respond to actions on the platform in real time. It employs experts from across the company, including native speakers, to allow them to keep a close eye on the situation so they can quickly remove content that violates their community standards. They have also launched a new feature in Ukraine that allows people to block their profile to provide an additional level of confidentiality and security of their information. Last week, the FB Media Partnerships team launched a journalist security campaign that includes a new journalist security website and manuals available in several languages that explain the contents of the attachment (such as 2FA settings, harassment reports, etc.). These guides will be updated as the content is updated. The Meta Journalism project offers resources for training and support : arm yourself with resources to help reduce digital security risks and find organizations that can address other security issues you may face, including legal issues, mental health and physical security. Material and technical support Katapult Katapult, an independent magazine with offices in northeastern Germany, offers editorial facilities for Ukrainian refugee journalists.
