HBO Max launches in CEE today
HBO Max will today, March 8, expand to an additional 15 countries in Europe where it replaces HBO España and HBO Go. Viewers can now enjoy HBO in up to 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, WarnerMedia announced.
Today's expansion makes HBO Max available in a total of 61 markets worldwide, which is roughly the same number of regions as Disney+ but still a long way from Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+ and Netflix. "From today, HBO Max is streaming in 21 European countries with Central and Eastern Europe, Portugal and the Netherlands joining the Nordics, Spain and Andorra where we launched the platform last year," said Christina Sulebakk, General Manager, HBO Max EMEA. The 15 new European countries are: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia. HBO Max is entering Europe with an extraordinary offer of 33% to 50% lifetime discount (depending on region) to bring the monthly price down from 6 to 3 euro per month for the basic package (720p, 1 concurrent stream) or from 8 to 4 Euro per month for the Standard package (1080, 4K, 3 concurrent streams). To redeem the lifetime offer users must sign up in the first weeks. HBO Max is available on Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Smart TV and other platforms. See the table at the bottom. As part of the HBO Max launch in Europe, Warner Bros is reducing the theatrical window for its latest blockbuster movies to 45 days. It means that users can expect Warner movies to show up on HBO Max 45 days after the premiere in cinemas. HBO Max in Europe offers movies and series from Warner Bros, HBO, DC, Cartoon Network, Max Originals and more content. Recent movies include The Matrix Resurrections, Dune, King Richard, The Suicide Squad and Tom and Jerry and new originals include Station Eleven, Peacemaker, Raised by Wolves season 2 and Sex Lives of College Girls. 4K streaming on HBO Max in Europe comes in at 16-22 Mbps (HEVC) for average video bitrate, with peaks exceeding 30 Mbps, according to FlatpanelsHD's sample tests. Dolby Atmos is available for some titles. HBO Max will launch in an additional six European countries later this year. Christina Sulebakk, General Manager, HBO Max EMEA, commented: “From today, HBO Max is streaming in 21 European countries with Central and Eastern Europe, Portugal and the Netherlands joining the Nordics, Spain and Andorra where we launched the platform last year. “Central and Eastern Europe is where it all began for our European business back in 1991 with our first linear channels and we’re pleased that today, more than 30 years later, we’re bringing fans in the region a completely new way to access all their favourite entertainment”. Johannes Larcher, Head of HBO Max International, said: “In under 24 months we have built a scalable streaming business present in 61 territories and counting. International is going to continue be an important part of our global growth story going forward. “I am particularly proud that our presence in Central and Eastern Europe is further strengthened by today’s launch of HBO Max, and that we are doubling down on our strong commitment to fans, partners and employees across the region during this challenging time”.
