Baltic states call for EU ban on more Russian media
Before the meeting of EU media ministers on Monday, the three Baltic states of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are calling for more Russian television stations to be included on the European Union's sanctions list o put. This emerges from an internal paper by the federal government, Der Spiegel reports.
Accordingly, the three countries criticize the fact that Russian war propaganda is still being disseminated via the channels Rossija RTR (formerly RTR Planeta), Rossija 24 and TV Center International. These three media also had a significant reach in Europe. At the beginning of March, the EU had already banned the distribution of the Kremlin-affiliated state broadcasters RT (formerly Russia Today) and Sputnik via cable, satellite and the Internet. The temporary ban also affected the German and French language branches of the respective channels. The unusual step was justified by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (CDU) that the "mouthpieces of the Kremlin" should no longer be allowed in times of war "to spread their toxic lies to justify Vladimir Putin's war and to try to split our Union".
