ETV dedicates special movie program to Ukraine
In support of Ukraine and its people, on Monday at 20.00, ETV showed a joint singing of Estonian choirs at the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds and a new documentary about the destroyed city of Mariupol. The channel will also offer Ukrainian feature films on three Saturdays in a row, ERR informs.
ETV broadcast a singing statement of support for the choirs, which gathered at the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds this Sunday. The large joint choir performed the iconic song of Ukraine Oh, the Red Viburnum in the Meadow(Oi u Luzi Chervona Kalyna) and two songs from the Estonian Patriotic Song Festival He Flies Towards The Beehive (Ta Lendab Mesipuu Poole) and My Fatherland is My Love (Mu Isamaa on Minu Arm). A special video will be made that will be sent all over the world to remind people that Ukraine is not alone and continues to need support. This Monday, Mariupol - The Chronicles of Hell (Mariupol - Põrgu Kroonikad) continued on the topic of Ukraine - a newly completed documentary, which will take the viewers to the ruined city that survived the Russian occupation, the total destruction and humanitarian disaster. It covers the life of the survivors and their salvation. For three consecutive weeks, ETV will dedicate Saturday's film nights to Ukrainian feature films. The films Turtle Pigeon's Nest (May 21), Cherkasy (May 28) and The Wild Fields (June 4) will be shown during the Ukrainian film evenings. Along with the Ukrainian films and joint choirs, ETV has also invited the viewers to support Ukraine thru the NGO Slava Ukraini. Turtle Pigeon's Nest is a feature film made in collaboration with Ukraine and Italy about a woman named Daryna, who has worked in Italy for a long time as a domestic worker to provide a better life to her family, which remained in Ukraine. When she finally came back home to Ukraine, she discovered that not everything is as rosy as she hoped. Her husband has started drinking and neglected the house he was supposed to build, while their daughter is pregnant and alone. Cherkasy is a war drama based on actual events leading up to 2014, when the 'green men' started the occupation of Crimea. The minesweeper Cherkasy, together with other Ukrainian ships, got stuck on Lake Donuzlav and was unable to reach the Black Sea from its base station. Ukrainian ships surrendered to the Russian forces one after the other but Cherkasy never gave up. The film enjoyed great popularity in Ukraine and was nominated for five Ukrainian film awards, winning one of them. The director Tõmur Yashchenko was born and raised in Cherkasy. The drama The Wild Fields is based on Serhiy Zhadan's novel Voroshilovgrad. After his brother's sudden disappearance, German returns to his home in Donbas to take over a family-owned gas station. Soon, however, he finds himself in the spotlight of the local mafia and falls in love with his brother's accountant Olga. And this is where the fight for one's self, his wealth and dignity begins.
