Bulgaria identifies Russian hackers who attacked government websites
 17 Oct 2022
The websites of the President of Bulgaria and several other government sites are vulnerable to a large-scale cyber attack. This is reported by Radio Svoboda with reference to the Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev. Local TV channels and government officials also inform about this.

According to these data, in addition to the president's office, the DDoS attack paralyzed the websites of the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, and the Constitutional Court. As usual during a DDoS attack, these web resources received an excessive number of requests, which slowed down the work of the pages or disabled them.

As Geshev reported, the attack was carried out from the Russian city of Magnitogorsk.

The Ministry of Digital Affairs of Bulgaria informs that the cyber specialists were able to stop the hacker attack without significant consequences. The Russian hacker group KillNet claimed responsibility, Dnevnik reported. The group announced the attack on its Telegram channel. Members of KillNet call themselves pro-Kremlin patriots. The purpose of their attacks is to attract attention and spread misinformation.

As part of the European Union, Bulgaria protects European values, Geshev said, adding that this is expected to have consequences.

Hackers connected to Russia recently attacked the websites of 14 US airports. Web resources were unavailable on the morning of October 10. As noted, it did not directly affect air travel in the country, but it created inconvenience for those who were looking for travel information.

In early September in Japan, 20 websites in four ministries suffered a denial of service (DDoS) attack. The hacker group Killnet claimed responsibility.
