The EU plans to ban four more Russian TV channels
On Wednesday, December 7, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the new package of sanctions against Russia will include restrictions on four Russian propaganda TV channels, which are planned to be removed from the airwaves of EU countries. The names of the channels have not yet been announced.
According to Politico, a separate document detailing a list of new organizations facing sanctions, the broadcast licenses for NTV/NTV Mir, Rossiya 1, REN TV and Perviy will be suspended. The ninth package also announced sanctions against individuals and legal entities, against three Russian banks, as well as the introduction of new export controls and restrictions for dual-purpose goods "that can be used by the Russian military machine." In particular, these are key chemicals, nerve agents, electronics and IT components. "Almost 200 more individuals and legal entities have been added to our sanctions list. This includes both the Russian armed forces and individual officers and defense industrial enterprises, as well as members of the State Duma, the Federation Council, ministers, governors and political parties. The list includes figures who played a key role in Russia's brutal and deliberate missile attacks on the civilian population, in the abduction of Ukrainian children to Russia, and in the theft of Ukrainian agricultural products," Von der Leyen announced. The European Union also proposes to introduce additional economic measures against the Russian energy and mining sectors and limit Russia's access to all types of drones - directly and through potential suppliers from third countries, for example, Iran. According to the correspondent of "Radio Liberty" Rikard Jozwiak, the EU ambassadors will discuss the 9th package of sanctions against Russia on Friday, and probably the approval of the next package can be quick. In May 2022, the EU introduced sanctions against state-owned Russian TV channels. In particular, RTR Planeta, Rossiya 24 and TV Center - International were banned from cable, satellite and Internet broadcasting in the EU. Russian propaganda channels RT and Sputnik on YouTube are also blocked on the territory of the Union. RELATED
