Moldova to open Center for Combating Disinformation
The Government of Moldova has approved the creation of the Center for Strategic Communications and Combating Disinformation "Patriot". The government believes that the creation of such a center is necessary to reduce the influence of harmful information on decision-making processes in the country.
The Center will have a mission to consolidate and improve interagency efforts to combat disinformation, information manipulation, and the coordinated dissemination of messages, narratives, regardless of their origin, that pose a danger or may harm national security and interests. "For a long time, we ignored propaganda and disinformation. Now we find that everything becomes completely distorted, and people believe that war is justified, aggression is justified, that it is normal to incite ethnic hatred. This is what we have come to," said Prime Minister of Moldova Dorin Recan during the government meeting. In May, the President of Moldova, Maya Sandu, proposed to the Parliament to create a state department to counter disinformation and propaganda, particularly Russian. In March, five websites of the Russian propaganda media Sputnik were blocked in Moldova. The Minister of Defense of Moldova, Anatoly Nosatiy, said in an interview with AFP in March that Russia is waging a hybrid war against the country with the aim of overthrowing the state power, but Moldova is not in "immediate military danger”.
