Hungary and Poland lead EU in US content on streaming platforms
 08 Jul 2025
Poland and Hungary have the highest share of American content in their streaming catalogs among EU countries, according to a new report by the European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO). In Poland, 57% of on-demand video offerings come from the U.S., while Hungary tops the list at 58%. By contrast, France has a significantly lower proportion (42%), with a stronger emphasis on domestic and European productions.

Only 15% of streaming content in Poland is EU-produced, compared to 34% in France. Just 3% of Poland’s catalog consists of locally made films and series—far below France’s 22%.

Across the EU, 49% of streaming content originates from the U.S., while European works (both EU and non-EU) make up 25.3%.

France prioritizes local and EU content (34% combined), with fewer U.S. imports. Croatia & Malta have the lowest U.S. content share (37%), with a high volume of non-European productions (e.g., South Korean, Indian). Slovenia & Malta feature the smallest proportion of national content (just 0.08%).

The data highlights disparities in media diversity across the EU. While Poland and Hungary lean heavily on Hollywood productions, countries like France enforce policies to promote domestic and European works. The report raises questions about cultural sovereignty and market dynamics in the streaming era.
