Hungarian broadcaster TV2 will end its long-running news program Tények (Facts), according to the channel’s CEO Miklós Vaszily, as reported by 444. The program has been widely described by opposition figures as a key instrument of pro-government messaging during the era of Viktor Orbán.

Vaszily said in a statement that the broadcaster is working on renewing its news and entertainment lineup due to what he called the “erosion of the Tények brand.” He added that TV2’s goal is to deliver news content meeting “professional standards” through newly introduced brands and after drawing necessary conclusions. However, he did not specify when the final edition of Tények will air.

The announcement comes in the aftermath of Hungary’s recent political shift. Peter Magyar, a leading opposition figure and future prime minister, sharply criticized the program, calling it “the flagship of propaganda in the Orbán era” and “the most shameful program in the history of Hungarian media.”

Hungarian media have also reported that several figures closely associated with the channel’s pro-government editorial line have already left TV2 following Orbán’s electoral defeat.

Tények first launched in 1997 alongside the TV2 channel and has been one of Hungary’s most recognizable daily news programs. In recent years, it has faced sustained criticism from opposition politicians and media watchdogs, who accused it of aggressive pro-government framing and smear campaigns targeting political opponents.

The development follows a broader political transition in Hungary. The opposition Tisza party, led by Magyar, won the parliamentary election on April 12, ending 16 years of uninterrupted rule by Viktor Orbán. The party secured 141 seats in the 199-member National Assembly, giving it a constitutional majority. The new government is expected to be sworn in on May 9.
